BROCANTE

Local antique market, La Brocante d’Ahetze, takes place every third Sunday. Ahetze is a small Basque town, about a fifteen minute drive from Biarritz, that you get to by driving down some cute country roads lined with farm houses and fields of round hay bales. It’s one of the biggest markets happening monthly, with many vendors lining the streets of this small town and filling the courtyard next to the church, bells chiming every hour. The whole experience is very magical and seems like a scene out of an old movie!

From then for 5 days until Sunday the whole town wears white with a red scarf and enjoys the contagious party atmosphere.

At midday every day when the King of the festival, King Léon wakens, festivities start and continue throughout the day with Bandas(traditional bands), floral processions, floats and parades of giant papier-maché figures and floats, bull-runs on Place St André, Pelota tournaments in the Trinquet Moderne...everyone, everywhere is in a festive spirit and wearing white and red! Thursday is children's day with a vast picnic lunch, clown displays and games. As night falls a festive euphoria takes hold of people of all origins, cultures and languages in the crowded bars, restaurants and stalls lining the River Nive. BAYONNE

Bullfighting exists in some parts of southern France as well as Spain. Bayonne is the oldest bullfighting town in France and is proud of this tradition that includes the world’s oldest written reference to Running of the Bulls dating from 1289  – part of law concerning the driving of animals through the streets to the slaughter house.

The first Spanish-style bull run dates back to 1701 and took place in an arena on the Place de la Liberté in honour of King Philippe V of Spain. The modern day version of the bullfight which so fascinated Hemingway emerged in France, again in Bayonne in the St Esprit area. The neo moorish style arena was inaugurated in 1893 and, with a capacity of 10,400, is the largest in South West France. Every season the world’s top matadors fight prize bulls on the sandy floor of this legendary arena.
