CHILLIDA LEKU MUSEUM

HERNANI

Chillida Leku is a unique museum, made in itself as a great work of art. In it, the fusion between art and nature occurs naturally. The sculptures are integrated into the landscape as if they had always been part of it. In the garden, beech, oak, and magnolia trees coexist with monumental steel and granite sculptures located in perfect dialogue with the environment. Although the works present an aspect of monumentality, the place was built on a human scale, the scale the artist always used, putting people as the measure of his work.

MARCH 1 - JANUARY 12

CRISTÓBAL BALENCIAGA MUSEUM

GETARIA

Cristóbal Balenciaga Eizaguirre was born into a working-class family in the town of Getaria (Basque Country, Spain) on 21st January 1895. His father, a fisherman, died when Balenciaga was 11 years old. His mother, a figure of reference for Balenciaga, was a seamstress and worked for the Marquises de Casa-Torres family.

This meant that, from a very young age, Balenciaga was in contact with his mother’s trade, combined with the elegance and fine taste of the marchioness, who helped to encourage his talent and would become one of his first clients. By 1907 he appeared as a registered citizen of San Sebastián, where he started to learn the trade of tailor-making while working at a number of establishments with connections to Parisian fashion. At that time, the city was enjoying a heyday of tertiary economic activity, boosted by the seasonal presence of the court in summer and the tourist attraction of the Basque Coast.

THE FIRST VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD

MUSEO MARITIMO VASCO

DONOSTIA - SAN SEBASTIÁN

The merit of having made the first round the world has been attributed to different historical figures. There are three main candidates: Francis Drake, Fernando de Magallanes and Juan Sebastián de Elcano. For the first time, this exhibition reveals the transcendental role of Elcano and the Basque contribution to the First Tour of the World (1519-1522), one of the great events in the history of mankind.

500 years ago Juan Sebastián de Elcano's expedition was the first to go around the world. Nao Victoria, commanded by the Guipuzcoan, was the only survivor of the 5 who left in search of a new route to the Moluccas, source of the most precious spices. This great feat was made possible thanks to the confluence of nautical knowledge and naval technology of the Basque Country that, from a century earlier, dominated the main sea routes of western Europe. The exhibition “Elkano. The First Voyage Around the World” claims that the first circumnavigation was possible thanks to Elcano's initiative and its nautical knowledge.

IÑIGO MANTEROLA

PAINTING AND SCULPTURE

ZARAUTZ

Since his childhood, Manterola has shown an interest in drawing and painting. And he believes this creative interest will be with him for life.

Born into a family with a seafaring tradition, a distinct theme soon emerged in the form of the coastal fishing boats, the arrantzales fishermen and the hustle and bustle of the port. the subject matter has not changed, but Manterola now seeks to submerge it momentarily in a nonfigurative style.

On this necessary path, he feeds off his experience and lays the artistic building blocks of which it is comprised, all the while changing and developing as a person.

PERMANENT EXHIBITION

SAN TELMO MUSEUM

DONOSTIA - SAN SEBASTIÁN

The museum was set up in 1.900 on the proposal of the Bascongada Friends of the Country Economic Society. Following the success of the exhibitions held in the late 19th century in San Sebastian, a petition was raised to the Municipal Council to set up a Municipal Museum. The small budget assigned to the museum at the start made it impossible to make acquisitions of any great value and so consequently the Mayor, José Machimbarrena, appealed to the people of San Sebastian who immediately brought forth donations and deposits. These were the first objects that began this museum.
